The best NotebookLM alternatives, by what you need

Illustration: an open book in the center with five app cards arranged in an arc around it and linked by dotted lines, the top card highlighted in yellow.

The best NotebookLM alternative depends on what you use it for. To ask questions about your own files privately on a Mac, try Citenook or Elephas. For a free, open-source copy that even makes podcasts, try Open Notebook. If you already pay for ChatGPT, Claude or Microsoft 365, their Projects and Notebooks features cover the basics. For research papers, Elicit searches the literature for you.

NotebookLM is now called Gemini Notebook; Google renamed it on 16 July 2026. This guide compares nine alternatives by job, with where your files go, source limits, whether each makes audio overviews, and price, checked on each company's own pages on 23 October 2026. We make Citenook, one of the apps on this list, so we've tried to be plain about where others do better.

Why people look for a NotebookLM alternative

  • Source limits: 50 sources per notebook on the free plan, up to 300 on Pro and 600 on the top plan. See the source limit guide.
  • Privacy: every file goes to Google's servers, which rules it out for confidential work.
  • No offline mode: it only works online. See NotebookLM offline.
  • One notebook at a time: it can't search across notebooks or a whole folder. More in NotebookLM's limitations.

For private answers from your files

Citenook (our app) reads whole folders of PDFs, Word files, notes and spreadsheets on your Mac and answers only from them, with each answer linked to the exact sentence it came from. With Apple Intelligence or a downloaded model, nothing is uploaded and it works offline; there's no source cap on the Pro plans. It doesn't make audio overviews, quizzes or slides, it's Mac only, and on-device models write simpler answers than Google's. More detail on our Citenook as a NotebookLM alternative page.

Elephas is a Mac and iPhone app that also answers from your documents, can run models on the Mac, and adds writing help in every app. Its plans start at $19 a month after a 7-day trial; it has an iPhone app, which Citenook doesn't.

Free and open source

Open Notebook describes itself as "an Open Source implementation of Notebook LM with more flexibility and features." It's MIT-licensed with over 40,000 stars on GitHub, works with more than 20 model providers including local Ollama models, cites its sources, and makes podcasts with 1 to 4 speakers, where NotebookLM uses two. The catch: you run it yourself with Docker, and its interface has "no password by default," so set one before using it on a shared network.

AnythingLLM is a free, MIT-licensed desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux that chats with your documents using local or cloud models, with no account. It's flexible, though you may need to tune its settings to get the best answers.

If you already pay for a big AI

  • ChatGPT Projects keep files, chats and instructions together, with up to 25 files per project on Plus and 40 on Pro and business plans. Answers can mix your files with the web and the model's own knowledge, so they're not limited to your sources. See NotebookLM vs ChatGPT.
  • Claude Projects handle long documents well; paid plans switch to retrieval automatically to hold up to ten times more. They don't make audio or quizzes.
  • Microsoft Copilot Notebooks gather Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PDF and OneNote files and can create audio overviews, but Microsoft says audio is "available only to commercial Microsoft 365 users with work or school" accounts.
  • Perplexity Projects, formerly Spaces, combine your files with Perplexity's web search, which suits research that needs current sources.

For reading lists and research papers

  • Recall saves and summarizes YouTube videos, podcasts, articles and PDFs, with chat and quizzes on its paid plan. It's more a personal library than a source-only Q and A tool.
  • Elicit searches more than 138 million academic papers and lets you chat with them, from a free tier up to $49 a month for Pro. It finds papers for you rather than working from your private folder.

When to stay on Gemini Notebook

If your files aren't confidential and you like Audio Overviews, flashcards, quizzes and slides, Gemini Notebook is still the most complete free option, and nothing above matches all its study tools. Start with our guides to how to use NotebookLM and whether it's free.

Questions

What is the best alternative to NotebookLM?

It depends on the job: Citenook or Elephas for private answers from your files on a Mac, Open Notebook for a free self-hosted copy with podcasts, ChatGPT or Claude Projects if you already pay for them, and Elicit for research papers.

Is there a free NotebookLM alternative?

Yes. Open Notebook and AnythingLLM are free and open source. ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity also have free tiers with smaller limits.

Is there an open-source NotebookLM?

Open Notebook is the closest: an MIT-licensed project you run yourself with Docker, with citations and multi-speaker podcasts.

Is there a NotebookLM alternative that works offline?

Yes. Citenook, AnythingLLM and Elephas can run AI models on your computer, and Open Notebook can use local models through Ollama.

Which alternatives make podcasts like Audio Overviews?

Open Notebook makes podcasts with 1 to 4 speakers. Microsoft Copilot Notebooks make audio overviews for work and school accounts. Recall reads summaries aloud.
