Citenook

For students

Study from your own notes, with sources

Citenook is a Mac app that answers questions from your lecture notes, readings and recordings, and shows where each answer came from, so you can check it and learn from the source.

The problem

"Which lecture covered this? What did the professor say would be on the exam? Where's that definition from the reading?" Your notes are spread across PDFs, slides, recordings and apps. Chatbots answer from the internet, not from your course, and you can't tell what your lecturer actually said.

Questions you can ask

Sample answers from made-up course files, to show how Citenook answers.

What did the lecturer say would be on the midterm?

Chapters 3 to 6, with one long question on market failure1. Formulas will be given1.

Study the honest way

From your course

Answers come from your own notes and readings, not the internet, so they match what you were taught.

See the source

Every fact links to the page or slide, so you read the real thing, not just a summary.

Free models

Use Apple Intelligence or a free model on your Mac. No AI subscription needed, and it works offline.

Your school's rules

Use it to study and find things. Follow your school's rules on AI in assignments.

A setup that works

  1. 1

    One brain per course

Keep each course's notes apart, so answers stay on topic.

  2. 2

    Add the course folder

New slides and readings are read as you save them.

  3. 3

    Add recordings

Lectures are transcribed on your Mac and become searchable.

  4. 4

    Quiz yourself

Ask for practice questions, then check each one against its source.

Questions

Do I need to pay for ChatGPT too?

No. Apple Intelligence and models you download in Settings are free to use with Citenook. An online AI key is optional.

Which Mac do I need?

A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) on macOS 15 or later. With 8 GB of memory, Apple Intelligence is the better choice for answers on your Mac.

Can it transcribe my lecture recordings?

Yes, on the Pro and Pro+ plans. Recordings are transcribed on your Mac, and a cited passage can play the recording from the moment it starts.

Is there a student discount?

Not at the moment. Every feature is free for 30 days with no card, so you can try it through a few weeks of classes first.

What does it cost after the free month?

$9.99, $19.99 or $29.99 a month. Standard covers PDFs, Word, spreadsheets and text for 3 courses. See pricing.
