Venice AI alternatives: private chatbots compared, and Venice vs ChatGPT

Illustration: a chat bubble with a padlock badge in the center, linked by dotted lines to five app cards around it showing a shield, a laptop highlighted in yellow, a cloud with a padlock, a bird and a key.

The best Venice AI alternative depends on why you're leaving. For a plain no-logs promise at a lower price, try Proton Lumo. For top models like GPT and Claude without an account, try Duck.ai. For the fewest filters and full privacy, run an open model on your own computer with LM Studio, Ollama or Jan, where nothing is sent anywhere.

This guide covers why people look beyond Venice, what Venice's privacy really depends on, six alternatives with their privacy promises and prices, Venice vs ChatGPT, and the honest answer for anyone who wants "uncensored". Facts come from each company's own pages, checked on 30 October 2026. Citenook isn't affiliated with any of them.

Why people look for a Venice alternative

  • Price and credits. The free plan gives "10 text prompts per day." Pro costs $18 a month, and video, music and the top image and text models are paid for with credits on top: Pro includes 100 a month, and "100 credits = $1."
  • Privacy depends on the model you pick. Venice has four privacy modes, and only the two strongest are verifiable. Those two need Pro (see the table below).
  • Chats live only in your browser. Venice says your history "stays on your device." That's good for privacy, but if you clear your browser data, those chats are gone unless you use Pro's encrypted backup.
  • "Uncensored" has conditions. Venice says you can turn off its Mature Filter "if you have a Pro plan or higher."
  • No refunds and a crypto token. Venice says subscriptions "are generally non-refundable," and Venice ties some features to its own crypto token, VVV, which many people would rather not deal with.

How private Venice really is

Every request goes through Venice's proxy, which relays it "without being stored," and your history stays on your device. What happens next depends on the mode of the model you choose:

ModeWhat Venice saysPlan
AnonymousFrontier models like GPT, Claude and Gemini. Your identity is hidden, but "you should assume the provider is storing your content."All
Private (default)Venice's own GPUs or zero-retention partners, "enforced by contractual commitments." Venice itself calls it "Trust-based."All
TEERuns in a hardware-isolated enclave; "GPU providers cannot access your prompts," checked by remote attestationPro
E2EEYour prompt is encrypted on your device and only decrypted inside a verified enclave, with no web search or memoryPro

So the common claim that "Venice is private" is only fully true for its Pro-only modes. For how these levels compare with other tools, see what private AI really means.

Proton Lumo: the simplest private chat

Lumo is from Proton, the company behind Proton Mail. Its promise is plain: "we keep no logs of what you ask, or what Lumo replies," and it doesn't use your chats for training. Your saved history is stored with zero-access encryption, so only you can read it after you sign in, and guest chats are erased when the session ends.

Better than Venice: a long-standing privacy company, one clear policy for every chat, and a lower price. Lumo Plus is $9.99 a month billed yearly ($119.88), or $12.99 month to month, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Falls short: it runs Proton's choice of open-source models, not GPT or Claude, has normal content filters, and has no video studio.

Duck.ai: top models without an account

Duck.ai is DuckDuckGo's chat. DuckDuckGo says it "does not record or store any of your chats" by default, and that your chats aren't used to train models by DuckDuckGo or the providers. Every model provider agrees to "delete your prompts and responses immediately after generating a reply" and never train on them.

Better than Venice: well-known frontier models under a written zero-retention agreement, free, no sign-up and no token. A paid DuckDuckGo subscription adds more models and higher limits. Falls short: daily limits on the free tier, normal filters, no image studio, and you trust both DuckDuckGo and each provider to keep their promise.

Brave Leo: private help inside your browser

Leo is built into the Brave browser. Brave says Leo "doesn't retain or share chats, or use them for additional model training," and "no account or login is required." It can summarize the page you're on, and it can also connect to a model you run yourself.

Better than Venice: free, always one click away while you browse, no account. "Brave Leo is free to use," with a Premium plan for more models and faster answers. Falls short: you need the Brave browser, it's built for quick text help rather than long projects, and it has normal filters unless you connect your own model.

LM Studio: the easiest way to run AI on your own computer

LM Studio is a free app for Mac, Windows and Linux that downloads open models and chats with them offline. Nothing you type leaves your computer, so there's no company to trust with your chats. Our guide to LM Studio on a Mac walks through setup and which model fits your memory.

Better than Venice: real privacy without promises, free for home and work, works without internet, and you choose the model, including ones with fewer filters. Falls short: answers are only as good as a model your computer can run, which is smaller than GPT or Claude, and a Mac with 16 GB of memory or more helps.

Ollama: any open model, for power users

Ollama is free, open-source software that runs models on your computer and lets other apps use them. It's the most flexible option if you want to try many models, including uncensored community versions. It also sells optional cloud plans; those aren't local.

Better than Venice: nothing leaves your machine, it's free, and the model choice is huge. Falls short: it's more technical than a chat app; many people pair it with a chat front end. See LM Studio vs Ollama.

Jan: open-source offline chat

Jan is a free, open-source desktop app (Apache 2.0 licence) that looks and feels like ChatGPT but runs models on your computer. It can also connect to online models if you add a key.

Better than Venice: open code you can check, free, offline. Falls short: like the other local apps, quality depends on your computer, and it has no image or video tools. More options in our LM Studio alternatives guide.

Venice AI vs ChatGPT

Venice isn't a better ChatGPT; it's a different trade. ChatGPT has more polished features, like projects, voice and file tools. Venice offers more privacy choices and fewer filters, but it asks you to trust a company whose strongest privacy needs Pro. If you stay with ChatGPT, turn off "Improve the model for everyone" and use Temporary Chat; our guides to whether ChatGPT is confidential and ChatGPT memory show how.

If you want uncensored AI

"Uncensored" depends on two things: the model, and who runs it. On Venice it depends on the model you pick, a setting and your plan. The only setup where nobody else applies filters or sees your prompts is an open model on your own computer, with LM Studio, Ollama or Jan. You pick the model; the trade-off is smaller models and your own hardware.

If what you want is a private ChatGPT on your Mac

If you want ChatGPT-style help without sending your words to a chat service, Citenook is a Mac app that answers everyday questions and questions about your own files with Apple Intelligence or a model you download, so nothing leaves your Mac and it works offline. Answers from your files link to the exact passage. If you'd rather use an online model, you can add your own key, and then your question and the passages it needs go to that company.

It's honest to say what it isn't: it's not uncensored, it doesn't make images or video, and it's Mac only (Apple silicon, macOS 15 or later). It's free for 30 days with no card, then from $9.99 a month.

Questions

What is the best alternative to Venice AI?

For private online chat, Proton Lumo; for top models without an account, Duck.ai; for full privacy and the fewest filters, an open model on your own computer with LM Studio, Ollama or Jan.

Is Venice AI really private?

Partly. Your history stays in your browser and the proxy doesn't store requests. But in Anonymous mode Venice says to assume the model provider stores your content, the default mode relies on contracts, and the verifiable modes need Pro.

Is Venice AI better than ChatGPT?

Not overall. Venice has more privacy options and fewer filters; ChatGPT has more features and stronger models of its own. For privacy in ChatGPT, turn off training and use Temporary Chat.

Is Venice AI free?

There's a free plan with 10 text prompts and 15 image prompts a day. Pro is $18 a month, and video and premium models use credits on top.

Where are Venice chats stored?

In your browser on your device, not on Venice's servers. Clearing your browser data deletes them unless you use Pro's encrypted backup.

Is there a free private alternative to Venice?

Yes. Duck.ai and Brave Leo are free and don't keep your chats, Lumo has a free plan, and LM Studio, Ollama and Jan are free and run entirely on your computer.
